The Millers Oils oil analysis service allows you to find out the condition of your oil, any current problems and to potentially pre-empt any future costly repairs.

The oil analysis sample kits, which are available to buy, will provide you with everything you need to send us a sample along with a simple form to provide us with the relevant details.

From this sample, the laboratory can determine what kind of life your engine or transmission has been living. From the various tests the sample will undergo we can build up a picture to see if any components are experiencing unusual amounts of wear, or any unusual characteristics.

The analysis identifies and quantifies wear metals, additives and contaminants in the lubricant. From there, a report is created that highlights any unusual characteristics, which can then be used to determine the health of the engine or transmission. For instance, the report could show abnormally high silicone content, which could mean an excess of silicone was used when assembling your engine. Alternatively, high levels of iron could point to the deterioration of cylinder liners or piston rings. The same for other metals showing early signs of bearing failure before the repair gets too costly!

VISCOSITY

Viscosity is crucial for optimum lubrication, and can change due to contamination or oxidation.

 

CONTAMINATION

Oil can become contaminated by environmental factors such as water, dust and debris, as well as by other oils.

 

WEAR METALS

Wear metals in the oil offer an insight into not just the health of the oil but the health of the machine components. High levels of a certain metal can indicate that a particular component may need replacing soon.

 

ADDITIVE LEVEL

Additives such as anti-wear, anti-corrosion etc. become depleted over time 

Using the kit

The kit comes with a small vial that you will need to fill with oil to then return to millers directly. Usually you would do the analysis at a service interval where you are going to be changing the oil to make this easier, otherwise the oil will need to be extracted from the engine, often popping off the oil filter to drain some from would be the easiest way. Once the lab has completed their analysis you will be presented with a report of the findings and some comments from the technician giving you an indication of your engines health.

GT86/BRZ Example

  • Without millers oil analysis, one day your engine starts to knock. At this point most of the components inside your engine will have suffered extensive damage and will almost certainly at least require a new crankshaft and oil pump assembly : VERY costly(££££).
  • With millers oil analysis bearing material in the oil would be picked up at the lab and you would know you are suffering bearing failure before large amounts of material travel through the engine and cause havvoc, this way you may get away with only a set of bearings and labour : Much much cheaper! This simple test could save you thousands in the long run.
